Yes, BBL HERO Treats Acne Too. Here’s How Light Clears a Breakout.

Kasey Bennett, FNP-BC

If you’ve been following along this fall, you know we talk about BBL HERO a lot. It’s our favorite way to lift a summer’s worth of sun damage, calm redness, and support collagen and cellular rejuvenation over time. But there’s a side of this device that doesn’t get nearly enough airtime: BBL HERO can be a genuinely effective treatment for active acne.

That surprises a lot of patients at our Nashville practice. Most people think of acne treatment as topicals, pads, or prescriptions, and those absolutely have their place. But light can reach parts of the acne process that a cream can’t. And through the end of October, BBL HERO is $100 off for face and $200 off for face, neck, and chest, which makes this a very good month to find out what it can do for your breakouts.

First, What’s Actually Happening in a Breakout

To understand why light helps, it helps to know what acne is made of. Nearly every breakout comes down to four overlapping factors:

  1. Excess oil. Sebaceous glands produce sebum, and some skin simply makes more of it.
  2. Clogged pores. Dead skin cells and oil build up inside the follicle and form a plug.
  3. Bacteria. Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes, formerly P. acnes) lives naturally on skin, but it thrives inside a clogged, oxygen-poor pore.
  4. Inflammation. Your immune system responds to that bacterial overgrowth, which is what turns a clogged pore into a red, swollen, tender pimple.

Most acne treatments target one or two of these factors. Salicylic acid works on clogged pores. Benzoyl peroxide works on bacteria. Retinoids work on cell turnover. BBL HERO’s acne protocol is built to work on several at once, in layers.

How BBL HERO’s Forever Clear Acne Protocol Works

BBL stands for BroadBand Light. It isn’t a laser. Instead of a single wavelength, it delivers a range of light that your provider can filter and tune for the specific problem being treated. Our device includes Forever Clear BBL, a dedicated acne protocol that treats your skin in three passes, each with a different job.

Step 1: Blue light targets acne-causing bacteria

C. acnes produces natural compounds called porphyrins. Porphyrins are light-sensitive, and when they absorb blue light, they trigger a reaction that damages the bacteria from the inside. That means fewer bacteria fueling breakouts, without antibiotics and without adding to antibiotic resistance. Research on light at this end of the spectrum in patients with moderate to severe acne that hadn’t responded to conventional therapy found that most patients improved, with the majority moving down to a mild acne grade by the end of treatment and no serious side effects reported.¹

Step 2: Yellow light calms inflammation and redness

The second pass uses yellow wavelengths that are absorbed by the small blood vessels feeding an inflamed breakout. That targeted energy helps reduce the redness and swelling around active lesions. It’s the same principle that makes BBL HERO so good at rosacea and flushing, applied to acne. Many patients notice their breakouts look less angry and settle faster.

Step 3: SkinTyte, the step that goes deeper

This is the step we don’t skip, and it’s worth understanding why. SkinTyte uses visible and infrared light delivered with the handpiece in constant motion, gently building heat in the deeper layers of the skin rather than just the surface.

Steps 1 and 2 work on what’s happening in a breakout right now. SkinTyte is aimed at where breakouts keep coming from. It’s applied across the areas where you break out most often, and that deeper, gradual heat:

  • Reaches the level where acne starts. Breakouts begin down in the follicle and oil gland, below the surface. Heating that deeper layer may help quiet the environment that keeps restarting the cycle, including oil production.
  • Amplifies the first two steps. In the published description of the three-step protocol, the SkinTyte pass is used specifically to boost the results of the blue and yellow passes and to target recurring breakout zones.²
  • Supports collagen remodeling. SkinTyte is the same setting we use to support firmness and skin quality. For acne patients, that collagen stimulation may help improve texture and early scarring while breakouts are being treated, instead of waiting until afterward.

In that published report, about 80% of patients treated with the full three-step protocol cleared completely or improved by at least 75% in their inflammatory acne.² That’s one dermatologist’s clinical experience, not a controlled trial, but it lines up with why we treat acne with all three steps, not just a quick pass of blue light.

Bonus: it fades the red marks breakouts leave behind

After a pimple heals, it often leaves a flat pink or red mark called post-inflammatory erythema (PIE). Those marks can linger for months. Because PIE is vascular, it responds well to the same wavelengths BBL HERO uses for redness, and brown post-acne marks can also improve with the pigment-targeting settings. So while you’re treating active acne, you’re also clearing the evidence of past breakouts.

And the “HERO” part matters for body acne

HERO stands for High Energy Rapid Output. It lets your provider glide the handpiece over larger areas, which makes treating the back, chest, and shoulders practical. If you’ve been dealing with breakouts on your back or chest after a sweaty Nashville summer of workouts, lake days, and humidity, this is worth asking about.

The Collagen Bonus: Acne Treatment That’s Also Skin Rejuvenation

Here’s where it ties back to why we love BBL HERO in the first place. A Stanford pilot study that biopsied skin before and after broadband light treatment found that BBL shifted the gene expression pattern of older, sun-exposed skin toward a younger pattern, including genes tied to collagen production and cellular function.³ Between that and the SkinTyte step, you aren’t choosing between clearing breakouts and investing in long-term skin health. You’re doing both.

Who BBL HERO for Acne Is (and Isn’t) Right For

BBL HERO tends to be a great fit for:

  • Inflammatory acne (red, tender papules and pustules) that keeps cycling back
  • Patients who’ve plateaued on topicals and want another tool in the plan
  • Patients looking to limit or avoid oral antibiotics
  • Back, chest, and shoulder acne
  • Lingering red or brown marks from past breakouts

It’s not the right primary tool for everyone. Deep cystic or nodular acne often needs prescription-level medical management, with BBL playing a supporting role. Depressed or “pitted” acne scars respond better to microneedling. And because BBL targets pigment, it isn’t appropriate for every skin tone or for freshly tanned skin. Recent use of certain medications, including isotretinoin, also affects timing. Kasey and Kayli assess your skin type, acne type, and medical history before deciding whether BBL HERO belongs in your plan.

What an Acne-Focused BBL HERO Series Looks Like

Like every skin treatment we offer, acne correction is a series, not a single appointment. Most patients start with a series of 3–6 treatments, with spacing set by your provider based on how active your acne is. Once breakouts are under control, maintenance every 3–4 months helps keep them that way, since hormones, stress, and seasons don’t stop doing their thing just because your skin looks clear.

Treatment usually takes 20–45 minutes depending on the area. Most patients describe the sensation as a warm snap, like a rubber band, and the SkinTyte pass as a building warmth. Expect mild redness for a few hours afterward.

Your at-home routine is half the result

BBL HERO handles bacteria, inflammation, and the deeper layers in the treatment room. Your daily pharmaceutical-grade routine handles everything in between:

  • Speed Racer, our glycolic and salicylic acid pad, keeps pores clear so fewer clogs form.
  • Glow Getter helps fade the brown marks breakouts leave behind.
  • SPF 50, every day. Sun exposure darkens post-acne marks and works against your results.

Your provider will tell you which products to pause around treatment and when to restart them.

Your October BBL HERO Special

Through the end of October, BBL HERO is $100 off for face and $200 off for face, neck, and chest. For acne patients, the bundle is especially worth a look: breakouts rarely stop at the jawline, and the neck and chest are common trouble spots. Because acne treatment works as a series, it’s also a smart time to book your first session and map out the rest of your plan with your provider.

At Hi, Finch, we build individualized, often year-long treatment plans. A patient might start with a BBL HERO series for active breakouts, move into microneedling once things calm down, and layer in Botox or Juvéderm if their assessment shows lines, volume, or facial balancing are part of their goals. Each tool has a different job. The plan is what makes them work together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can BBL HERO really treat active acne, or just acne marks?

Both. The Forever Clear protocol uses blue light to target acne-causing bacteria, yellow light to calm inflammation, and SkinTyte to work on the deeper layers where breakouts start. The same series can also fade the red and brown marks left by past breakouts.

What is SkinTyte, and why is it part of acne treatment?

SkinTyte is a BBL HERO setting that uses infrared light in constant motion to gently heat the deeper layers of the skin. In an acne treatment, it’s used to reinforce the blue and yellow steps and target areas where you break out repeatedly, and it may support collagen remodeling for texture at the same time.

How many BBL HERO sessions will I need for acne?

Most patients start with a series of 3–6 treatments, then move to maintenance every 3–4 months. Your provider sets the exact spacing based on how active your acne is and how your skin responds.

Is the October special good for acne treatment?

Yes. Through the end of October, BBL HERO is $100 off for face and $200 off for face, neck, and chest, and that applies whether you’re treating sun damage, redness, or acne.

Will BBL HERO get rid of acne scars?

BBL HERO is excellent for flat red or brown post-acne marks, and the SkinTyte step may help improve overall texture. Deeper, pitted scars usually respond better to microneedling, which we often sequence into a plan once active acne is under control.

If your breakouts keep coming back no matter what’s on your bathroom counter, light might be the missing piece. Book a consultation at hifinch.com before our October pricing wraps up, or DM us @hi_finch with your questions first.
