Glowing from Within: How Nutrition Affects Your Skin
Kayli Krasnow, FNP-CYour mom told you, “You are what you eat.” But is it true? In this article, we’re spilling the tea on how nutrition affects your skin.
Drink the water.
Whether Stanley, Corksickle, or Hydroflask is your brand of choice, invest in a good water bottle and make drinking water a daily habit. Curious how much water you should drink? Take your body weight and divide it in half. This is the minimum amount of water you should drink in ounces. If you drink coffee multiple times a day, this dehydrates your system so make sure you add the amount of ounces to the equation to replenish your body. For example, Let’s say you weigh 150 lbs and drink both a morning and afternoon 12 oz latte. 150/2=75+24 (for your lattes)= 99 oz/day.
Eat the rainbow.
When going through the store, choose to eat the rainbow and a variety of produce. If your plates have been looking a bit more sad beige than colorful, start with simple bowl meals. Think a lightened up version of your favorite Chipotle bowl or salads with delicious toppings and a bit of quinoa to keep you full. In colder months, opt for nutritional stir fry and cauliflower rice. As you can tell, the sky truly is the limit. By eating the rainbow and right amount of fruits and vegetables, your body will receive the needed nutrients where your skin directly benefits.
Indulge occasionally, not at every occasion.
We get it. It’s Friday night, your time of the month, game day, or a birthday. There’s always a reason to celebrate and it can take a massive toll on your skin. Ever notice after a night of drinking your skin immediately breaks out? While the correlation isn’t always that direct, we’re always for celebrating and enjoying your life. When approaching these celebrations, planning ahead will be a game changer for you. Start by asking yourself the question, “What are my non-essentials to celebrating?” Maybe it’s a favorite cocktail or piece of dessert you wait all year for. Then adjust your other choices around your essentials.
No screen eating.
The working lunch. Netflix binging while eating dinner. For many of us, our days are filled with screen time, including when we eat. Our bodies are in constant stress and have no time to unwind. If you find that your brain is always racing, this is one habit we highly recommend. By mindfully eating, you can immediately reduce your levels of cortisol. Less cortisol = less stress = less breakouts and aging on your skin.
