Before IPL Hair Removal…

  • Avoid sun exposure for several days before the treatment.
  • Avoid tanning lotions, self-tanners, and tanning beds for a week before the treatment.
  • Avoid other hair removal techniques for at least 4 weeks before the treatment.
  • Avoid blood-thinning medications for a week before the treatment to minimize swelling.
  • Trim and shave the target areas before the appointment.
  • Inform your cosmetic provider of your current medications and history of cold sores.
  • Postpone the treatment if you have active rashes or sores in the target areas.

During IPL Hair Removal…

  • You’ll have to wear protective eyewear.
  • Your skin will be cleansed, and a topical anesthetic will be applied.

  • Soothing creams and sunscreen may be applied after the treatment.

How does IPL hair removal work?

The BBL Hero device emits wavelengths of light energy. The light energy is absorbed by the melanin in the hair and converts it into thermal energy. The thermal energy destroys the tube-like follicles that produce hair. Destroying the hair follicle prevents future hair growth from the targeted area.

Why do you need multiple sessions?

Hair growth occurs in multiple stages — anagen (active phase), catagen (transition phase), and telogen (resting phase). Different hairs in the same area are usually at different phases of the hair growth cycle. However, light energy only works on the hairs still in the anagen phase, i.e., when the hair is connected to the hair follicle. As such, each session only destroys some of the hair follicles in the target area. That’s why you need multiple sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart to destroy all the unwanted hair follicles.

Does IPL hair removal hurt?
